Paul Frederick Carlson, 80 of New Cumberland passed away April 24th, 2018. He was born in Oil City, PA on September 22, 1937, and was a son of the late Elmer and Elizabeth (Anthony) Carlson. He will be deeply missed by his wife, Barbara (Delahunty) Carlson of New Cumberland, WV.
They were married on April 19, 1958, in Oil City, PA and recently celebrated 60 years of marriage. The Carlsons moved to New Cumberland in 1971. Paul enlisted as a Private and was promoted to Sergeant First Class in the US Army serving from 1959 to 1962 leading a145 man artillery firing battery in Fort Sill, OK.
He then served 4 years in the active reserves. Paul began his career in container manufacturing with Manion Steel Barrel and started working for Consolidated Container (formerly the Continental Can Company) in Oil City, PA in 1964 as a Line Maintainer. His dedication and hard work led him to become Plant Manager of the Newell, WV plant in 1988 and he earned the Plant Manager of the Year Award in 1991.
He retired after 35 years with the company. Paul was a very active father, coaching Little League and volunteering for the Boy Scouts of America and Booster Clubs. A member of the Newell Lions Club, the Newell American Legion, Post 114, and Chester First United Methodist Church, he was always willing to lend a hand when needed.
Paul was an avid hunter and a loyal Penn State fan. He was a devoted son, caring for his mother until her death at the age of 109. After his retirement, Paul and Barb enjoyed traveling in their RV.
Paul realized his life-long dream with a 3-month trip to Alaska. They also enjoyed a vacation to Barb’s dream location: Hawaii. He will be remembered with love and respect by his children: Jeff (Caryn) Carlson of Dover, DE and Chad (Jennifer) Carlson of Parker, CO; his brother Frank (Dottie) Carlson of Houston, TX; grandchildren Alan, Thomas and Eleanor Carlson of Parker, CO, and his nephew who lived with Paul and Barb during his youth, Steve (Juanita) Kelly of San Diego, CA.
He was preceded in death by sisters Joann Kelly of Oil City, PA and Ruth (Bruce) Robertson of Greenbelt, MD. Rev. Kara Rowe will celebrate Paul’s life on Saturday, April 28, at 10:00 am at the Chester First United Methodist Church.
A continued time of remembrance with food and fellowship will follow the service at the church on Saturday, from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. Friends may visit with the family at the Arner Funeral Chapel in Chester on Friday from 2:00 to 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Interment will be at the Riverside Cemetery in Pittsfield, PA Saturday at 5 pm.
