Obituary for Peggy Elizabeth McElwaney John 14 tells us that we should not let our hearts be troubled…”. in my Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
And if I go to prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself…”. Peggy Jones McElwaney believed this scripture with every bit of faith she could muster. In the wee hours of November 13, 2018, she gave God the opportunity to let her realize that promise as she gently went to Him.
Peggy Elizabeth Jones was born in Coweta County on March 28, 1937. She was one of nine children born to the late Floyd Winston and Ruby Marzell Herrin Jones. The early part of her life was spent in a close-knit community where everybody had some interest in the textile mills that provided most of the jobs.
She was blessed by parents who instilled in their children how very important friends were and that friendship began at home. These were lessons well-learned, for even all these years later, Peggy and her siblings were bound to each other by the love of a God who loved them each individually and the special bonds of love they shared with each other. The years did not diminish that love.
Peggy met Dan McElwaney and she was so taken by him that she let him change her last name in 1956 so she could become Peggy Jones McElwaney. For the next 57 years they shared an exemplary marriage. Both had a strong work ethic and eventually both of them would work at The Bonnell Company.
Peggy and Dan would raise their family on the same solid principles they had known growing up as they were a part of McIntosh Baptist Church and later, Welcome Road Baptist Church. Peggy loved music and singing as a part of the church choir. Getting busy in the kitchen was a great adventure for her, and it did not matter if it was cooking for three or thirty-three, she would relish the challenge.
Many of those meals would be for her large family. Those get togethers were loud, long and full of good things to eat. More importantly, there was an incredible bond of love for each other.
She and Dan would become travelers and Peggy was always ready to go anywhere, at any time. The exception to that might be the Arch in St. Louis. She did draw the line there!
Life as she knew it changed for Peggy after the death of her beloved Dan in 2013. The days were complicated by her own health issues, as time takes its toll on everyone. The one steadfast thing in her life, though, was her incredible faith in her creator that enabled her to face each day with absolutely no fear.
Peggy is survived by her children Tony McElwaney and his wife Dale; Lisa Pike and her husband Rich. Oh, how she loved the grandchildren Leslie Pike, Lyndsey Pike, Megan McElwaney McBride and John Ross, Lucy McElwaney Hall and Cody. She was blessed by one great grandchild, Emma Grace McElwaney-McBride.
Her children’s mates, like those of her grandchildren were loved as if she had birthed them herself and she always made that evident. Her surviving siblings are Horace Jones and Ferrel, Carl Jones and Gloria, Jerry Jones and Betty, James Jones and Becky, Betty Stanford, Lynda Jones Smith and Jett, Marzell Jones Shaddix and Jimmy. Her brother, Marvin, preceded her in death, but his wife, Sue Jones still maintains her standing in the family.
The wonderful life of this good woman will be remembered with love in a service to be held on Thursday, November 15, 2018 at 2:00 PM in the chapel of McKoon Funeral Home to be led by Reverend Dwight L. Moody. The family will receive friends at the funeral home beginning at 12:00 noon. Interment will follow at the historic Oak Hill Cemetery.
