Obituary for Petelo Filitonga Kaufusi PETELO FILITONGA KAUFUSI November 7, 1938 – September 19, 2018 Salt Lake City, Utah Before the dawn broke out a new day, our beloved husband, father, grandfather and greatgrandfather, Petelo Filitonga Kaufusi passed away peacefully at his Glendale, Utah home on September 19, 2018 at the age of 79. He was born November 7, 1938 in the beautiful island of Ha’akio, Vava’u in Tonga to the late Mesiulame Vaka Kaufusi and Sekolaia Teukifaivailo Fosita. He was the 7th child of 14 children consisting of 8 brothers and 5 sisters.
On December 13, 1962, he married his eternal companion, Eveline Kauvaka Tukuafu in Fua’amotu, Tonga. They were later sealed for time and all eternity on August 23, 1972 in the Salt Lake City Temple. They had 9 children, Sitiveni Steve (Michelle) Kaufusi, Makalita (Vea) Ofa, Lisiate Rich (Ofa) Kaufusi, Jeff (Brooke) Kaufusi, Henry (Toakase) Kaufusi, Doug Kaufusi, Jason (Tenille) Kaufusi and baby J Lindon Kaufusi (deceased).
He has 47 grand children, 5 great grandchildren and expecting 2 more shortly. His life was dedicated to God, his family and his fellow men. He served 3 different LDS missions and held numerous callings in the church.
In 1971 he migrated to the United States in the hopes of giving his children more opportunities for a better future. Along his journey through life he helped countless people come to America or get back on their feet. He gave whatever he had.
He was a hard worker that worked several jobs at once to provide for his family. He worked for over 25 years and retired as a Building Engineer for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the Salt Lake CIty Temple. Petelo’s dream of a better future for his children became reality as athletic and academic scholarships was the means to a college education.
He loved to watch his sons play football and would travel any distance to watch them. As his grandchildren grew older he took pride in their many academic accomplishments in school and also seeing them play, not only football but soccer, softball, volleyball, rugby, swimming, and tennis and also furthering their education in college. He loved his family very much and in his last days would reflect back on his life of how a simple man born and raised in a tiny island in the South Pacific had a dream of a better future for his family.
Now his posterity flourishes throughout the world. We are grateful for the countless doctors who had helped him along the way and also to Intermountain Home and Hospice for their tender and loving care of him in his last days here on Earth.
