Peter Asmann died on January 24, 2019, following a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. He is survived by his loving wife, Pam, his son: Thomas, his grandson: Dominic, his brother: Klaus (Manuela), his father-in-law: Bob Murray, his sister-in-law: Marcia Massengill (Paschall), his nieces: Christy Kuhlman (Austin), Kaci Wall (Drew), and great niece: Cora. He will be sorely missed by his family and many many dear friends who shared his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Christa and Herbert Asmann and mother-in-law: Betsy Murray. Pete was born in Germany during World War II and survived being a refugee by the heroic deeds of his mother, Christa. He joined the German Airforce and came to America as a young soldier to translate for the Redstone Arsenal.

After falling in love with America he became a U.S. citizen in 1976. Pete has always believed in the future of young people and worked tirelessly for children and youth in need. He worked with the Decatur CIty School System at Austin High School and began the first soccer team in Decatur.

He went on the help establish Horizon High School for teenagers who had difficulty in he regular high school environment. Due to him, many young people achieved a high school education who would have become dropouts. After his retirement, in 2003, he continued to help youth by volunteering to drive the Hartselle United Methodist Church van transporting children from elementary schools to hand bell practice.

He also volunteered daily at Burleson Elementary School assisting with “English as a Second Language” children. They called him “Pedro Pete”. His many interests included Tennessee football, a wide genre of music, boating, barbecuing and animals.

His vast knowledge of technology and helping neighbors earned him the nickname “the Wizard of Wires”. Pete loved people and had a great sense of humor. He was always ready to help anyone in need and formed life long friendships from Germany to many states in America and Canada.

His constant motivation and encouraging spirit will be missed by all. This world is a better place because of Pete Asmann. In lieu of flowers: please consider donations to Hospice of the Valley or to the First United Methodist Church in Hartselle, Alabama.
