Phillip Russell Canoy (Uncle Skippy) of South Bend, IN, passed away Friday, December 21, 2018, at the age of 68. Phil was born in St Louis, MO, on June 24, 1950, to the late James H. Canoy and Jane E. (Eberwein) Canoy Vosters. He was a graduate of Jackson High School in South Bend, IN.

Phil was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Jeanne E. Canoy and stepfather Cyril M. Vosters. He is survived by his sister Barb (Bill) Beven of Osceola, IN; niece Paige Beven of Osceola, IN; nephew John (Jeralee) Beven of Wauwatosa, WI; nephew Edward (Jessica) Beven of Osceola, IN; and grandniece Emma and grandnephews Wyatt and Whitten. Phil is also survived by stepsiblings Mike, Dan (Jan), Ken (Genia), Steve (Anne), Bob and Linda Vosters, all of Kalamazoo, MI.

Phil’s family moved to South Bend in 1963 from St. Louis. He had been employed at K-Mart on S. Michigan St. and Guisinger Colonial Chapel Funeral Home also on S. Michigan Street. After 27 years of service, he retired on April 1, 2003, from the St. Joseph County Sheriff Department with the rank of Captain.

Phil was a member of the FOP #155 and American Legion Pulaski Post #357. A funeral service officiated by Chaplain Steve Coyle will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 2, 2019, at Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan St., South Bend, IN. Friends may visit from 4:00 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday prior to the service.
