Alice R. Archer, 73 years old, passed away at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, December 21, 2018 at her home. Alice was born on June 19, 1945 in Chicago, IL to the late Robert and Ruth (Gardner) Ebey. She has lived in South Bend for the past ten years and was a former resident of North Manchester and New Paris, IN.
On December 27, 1969 in North Manchester, Alice and James Douglas Archer were united in marriage. Along with her husband, Doug, Alice is survived by their children: son, James Daniel Archer; daughter, Rebecca Ann (Jeffrey) Cooper of Goshen; daughter, Sarah Ruth Lawson of Ann Arbor, MI; grandchildren/adopted children, Kimberly Courtney Archer, Michael John Archer and Daniel Jay Archer, all of South Bend; grandchildren, Jessica Null of Elkhart, Katherine Stafford of Mishawaka, and Chase Cooper of Goshen; and two sisters, Mary Ebey of Greenville, OH, and Esther Ebey of Hinton, VA. Alice attended Resseguie and Custer Township Schools in Custer, MI and graduated in 1963 from Lancaster High School in Huntington, IN.
She was a 1966 graduate from Manchester University with a B.A. in psychology and earned a certificate in 1969 from King School of Social Change, Crozer Theological Seminary in Upland, PA. Alice continued her education and earned three master’s degrees: the first in 1977, an M.A. in peace studies from the Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary, Elkhart, IN; in 1991, an M.A. in counseling psychology from Adler University, Chicago, IL; and in 1996, an M.Div. from Bethany Theological Seminary, Richmond, IN.
Alice was employed in social service work in Elkhart, IN from 1977-1994. She was the pastor of Mt. Pleasant Church of the Brethren in Bourbon, IN from 1995-2010.
Within the Northern Indiana District, Church of the Brethren, she was formerly active as a moderator/moderator elect and board member. She was active with the ministry commission, witness commissions, ethics committee and was a moderator of several district congregations. Alice was passionate about her mission work and was active with international missions emphasizing service, relief and human development efforts in Haiti, Puerto Rico and Nigeria.
In particular, she led highly successful fundraising efforts in Indiana for safe water projects in Haiti and relief/support efforts for the Ekklesiyar Yan’uwa a Nigeria (EYN, Church of the Brethren in Nigeria) after recent Boko Haram attacks and kidnappings. Friends may visit with the family from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 26, 2018 at Palmer Funeral Home—Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend. A graveside service will be held at 10:45 a.m. on Thursday, December 27th at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, North Manchester, IN.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 29, 2018 at the Prince of Peace Church of the Brethren, 53105 Ironwood Road, South Bend. Pastor Ken Rieman will officiate. Palmer Funeral Home—Hickey Chapel is assisting the family.
