Growing up he worked as a sheep shearer, which was an occupation he had most of his life. He married Ethel Peterson on June 16, 1978. Raul is preceded in death by his parents and 1 nephew Ricky Gutierrez.

Survivors include his wife Ethel, daughters, Anna, Alice, and Avilda; sons, James, Paul, and Leon; sisters, Lydia and Virginia; brothers, Reynoldo and Roger; 16 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
