Richard “Dick” Sommer, 84, passed away Sunday, September 9, 2018. Dick was born in Dayton, Ohio on October 5, 1933. A gracious, loving, and kind man, he was the youngest of four children raised by John and Clara Sommer.

He served in the Army following the Korean conflict and attended Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, Fla. Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Glyne Jordan Sommer; their three children and spouses, Greg and Brenda Sommer, Cindy and Robin Jones, Sue and Ben Green; grandchildren Brian (Heather) Jones, Brenna (Aaron) Barney, Nikki (Mike) Sauer, Jordan and Caleb Sommer, Sommer Grace, Dakota and Sage Green; great grandchildren Branson Jones, Calie Jones, Gabriella, and Eden Barney; sister-in-law Dorothy Sommer; nephews and nieces of the Sommer family. A beloved part of the Jordan family, Richard is also survived by siblings-in-law Don and Von Jordan, Norma Brown, Alice and Richard Weil, Jane and Robin Richards, Charles and Margaret Jordan, Chuck and Pat Jordan; along with numerous nephews and nieces.

He dearly loved his wife and family. Richard will be remembered for his graciousness, kindness and his dry and often wicked sense of humor. He was an active member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.

He enjoyed working in his shop, building furniture and keepsakes for his family and spending time with his grandchildren. He was an avid fan of the USC Gamecocks. He will forever have the love, devotion and gratitude of his family.

The family expresses great gratitude to Kim Willis NP, Steven Minter DO, Eddie Williams MD, Bradley Word MD and the tremendous nurses and nursing techs on IICU, ICU and 8th Oncology at Palmetto Health Baptist. A celebration of life service for Richard “Dick” Sommer will be held on Monday, September 17, 12:00, noon, at Corpus Christi Catholic Church. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 11:00 am, and following the service with a luncheon for family and friends in the Fellowship Hall.

Graveside service will be held after luncheon at Woodridge Memorial Park. The family will greet friends Sunday, September 16, 2018, from 3 to 5pm, at Barr-Price Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to SCOA Cares Foundation www.
