Richard “Dick”‘s Obituary Richard E. “Dick” Seip, 78, of Stroudsburg, passed away Thursday Jan. 17th at Lehigh Valley Hospital – Cedar Crest in Allentown, after a lengthy illness. He was the husband of Ethel Lynn (Werkheiser) Seip with whom he shared 57 years of marriage.

Born July 21st 1940 in East Stroudsburg, he was the son of the late Clarence and Beatrice Decker Seip and was a lifelong Monroe County resident. Dick was a graduate of Stroudsburg High School. He worked, at the International Boiler Works, as an estimator, worked for McCalister construction, Lester Katz building homes, and for Pocono Medical Center in the maintenance department retiring in 2010 after 30 years of service.

He was a carpenter by trade and did many side jobs for people such as bath & kitchen remodels, making cabinets, and many other woodworking projects. Dick’s community involvement was extensive. He was a life member of Chemical Co. No.

1, former Fire Chief of the Stroudsburg Fire Department, a member of Phoenix Fireman’s Relief Association, Monroe County Fireman’s Association, and the Four County Fireman’s Association. Dick was very involved in the Boy Scouts of America, not only as the father of two Eagle scouts but was Cub Master of pack 86 in Stroudsburg for over 43 years. He was an assistant scout master of troop 86, a member of the order of the arrow, participated in and was an instructor for Scouting’s wood badge program.

He was a recipient of the Silver Beaver award and was made an honorary Eagle Scout by troop 86 in 2017. He made three treks to the Philmont Scout ranch in New Mexico, once with his son Jim. He also mentored his grandson Jarrett in Cub Pack 86.

He truly loved working with the scouting program and all of the kids, parents, and leaders. He was a faithful member of the Stroudsburg United Methodist Church all of his life. He was member and president of the Methodists men’s group.

He was for many years the indian at the churches ingathering, at Thanksgiving, alongside his great friend Sherdon Butz who played the pilgrim. He was a member of many different groups and committees and most recently was the chairman of the building and property committee. He spent many long hours at the church doing different things whether it was working on a project, washing dishes, cooking breakfast, or setting up for an event.

Dick had many hobbies. He had a booth at the Churches annual craft sale where he built and sold wooden toy trucks. A pastime he thoroughly enjoyed in his retirement.

Most remember him for his model trains and the hand built structures and bridges he made. He put his artistic talents to work making many different props, gadgets, and scenery used at cub scout meetings, for various groups, and for asthma camp. He also made several decorations still in use at the fire department’s annual Christmas display on Ann Street.

He was a counselor and volunteer for the Pocono Medical Center’s Upward Bound asthma camp held each summer for 28 years. He belonged to the Pocono Crickets camping club and was most noted for his being the co-emcee of that club’s “The Purple Cow Initiation” for new club members. He assisted the Stroudsburg High School band with hauling equipment to different events and thoroughly enjoyed going to hear his granddaughter play her violin in the school concerts.

In addition to his wife Lynn he is survived by his son Michael, of Stroudsburg, his son Jim and wife Jen of Salisbury MD, Grandsons Jarrett (USMC), Noah, Jonah, and granddaughter Marisa. His sisters Mary Burd of York and Jean Snyder of East Stroudsburg, and many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and many great friends. Aside from his parents he was preceded in death by his infant son Richard Allen Seip, a brother Robert H. Seip, daughter in law Linda Joy Seip, and great niece Alyssa Rachel Toner.

He especially loved his family and grandchildren very much. There will be a visitation from 5:00 to 8:00PM on Friday, January 25, at the William H. Clark Funeral Home, 1003 Main Street, Stroudsburg. Services will be held on Saturday, January 26, at Stroudsburg United Methodist Church, 547 Main Street, Stroudsburg; where visitation will begin at 10:00AM followed by the funeral service at 11:00AM with Rev.

Robert Shank officiating. Private burial will take place at the convenience of the family at Stroudsburg Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Stroudsburg United Methodist Church 547 Main St. Stroudsburg, PA 18360 or the Stroudsburg Fire Department 700 St. Stroudsburg, PA 18360 or to a charity of your choosing.
