Obituary for Mr. Richard Lee Childers, Jr. Richard Lee Childers, Jr. (Ricky, as he was affectionately known) was the third child of six children born to Richard Lee and Leola Hardeman Childers on March 16, 1959, in Oklahoma City (Tinker AFB). When Ricky was four years old the family moved from Oklahoma to Japan, where they remained for the next 4 years. In 1967 the family returned to Oklahoma City.

Upon graduation from Northwest Classen High School, Ricky joined the U.S. Navy, and traveled throughout the Pacific theater. During his military career, Ricky worked as an Operating Room Medic/Corpsman. Also during that time, he met and married Gretchen Jill, and one year later they were blessed by the birth of their son, Derrick Jerome Childers.

He was Honorably Discharged from service in 1990, at which point he continued his career in the medical field: working first as an Operating Room Surgical Technician at Balboa Medical Center in San Diego, CA, and finally as a Surgical Nurse/Technician at Baptist Hospital in Oklahoma City. When not working Ricky enjoyed bringing solace and comfort to others. He could also be the life of the party, and was an EXCELLENT dancer.

He became suddenly ill on July 19, 2018 and died in the care of physicians. Ricky was predeceased in death by his parents: Richard and Leola Childers; his former wife, Gretchen; his sisters: Deborah and Erica; and his brother, Christopher. Ricky’s passing is mourned by his son Derrick Jerome Childers; his cherished step-daughter, Shawnta Harris; two sisters: Phyllis Childers of Prince William County Virginia, and Felicia Morgan (Reginald) of Springfield, Missouri; and a host of other close family, friends, and neighbors.
