Robert Bradshaw McConnell, Jr. November 09, 1935 – January 18, 2019 Share this obituary Sign Guestbook Robert Bradshaw McConnell, Jr., died on Friday, January 18, 2019, at Our Lady of Peace Nursing Center in Charlottesville, VA. He was 83. Born November 9, 1935, in Asheville, NC, he was the son of Robert Bradshaw McConnell, Sr., and Margaret Powell McConnell.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Susan Cole Leach McConnell and a younger sister, Patricia McConnell. The eldest of three children, Bob attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and graduated in 1958 with a Bachelor of Science in Business. Upon graduation, he went to work for Wachovia Bank & Trust, where he spent his entire 39 year career, retiring as Senior Vice President for Wachovia Mortgage Company.

His retired years were spent in Pinehurst, NC, playing golf and enjoying time with his wife, Susan, as well as his daughters and grandchildren. Bob’s roots in the mountains of North Carolina provided him a lifelong love of and appreciation for the outdoors and bluegrass music. Bob bravely endured the loss of his wife as well as a prolonged battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

He will be remembered as the consummate gentleman, dependable and humble, with a delightful and self-deprecating sense of humor. Bob is survived by his daughters, Abigail McConnell Kimbrough and her husband Lance, Jane F. Cox and her husband Scott Milvae, his five treasured grandchildren Henry, Margaret, and Mac Kimbrough and Grace and Sophia Milvae, his youngest sister, Margaret Louise McMillen and her husband Will Erwin, his nephews Michael McMillen and Tate McMillen, his sister-in-law Jane Newby, as well as extended family members and close friends. The family would like to thank the caregivers and staff at the Lodge at Old Trail (Crozet, VA) and Our Lady of Peace Nursing Center (Charlottesville, VA), as well as the team at Hospice of the Piedmont VA for their loving care of Bob and his family.

A private memorial service will be held in his Blue Heaven of Chapel Hill, NC, for immediate family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of Central and Western VA, Hospice of the Piedmont VA, or a charity of choice.
