Robert D. Hughes, of Brownsville, died Saturday, May 19, 2018. He leaves three brothers, Michael of Bowling Green, KY. , William of Snellville, GA.

, and Ronald of Bloomfield Hills, MI. Robert was the son of Ann and Jay Hughes of Charleroi, who are predeceased. He was raised and educated in Uniontown and Charleroi.

Robert graduated from Charleroi High School in the class of 1964. He continued his education at California University of Pennsylvania, but was interrupted for service in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged and proceeded to graduate from California University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Psychology and Education Degree.

Upon graduation from California University of Pennsylvania he received a Teaching Assistantship at West Virginia University and was awarded a Master of Arts Degree in Learning Sciences. Robert was also inducted into Phi Delta Kappa Honorary Fraternity for Educators. He matriculated at John Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD.

, as a Kerry Taylor Scholar after receiving a Degree in Communication Disorders. Robert returned to California University of Pennsylvania and received a Master of Science degree in School Psychology. He also took classes at Columbia University in New York City in Advanced Studies for Learning Sciences.

He was a retired member of N.E.A. and P.S.E.A. and an active member of the America Legion in California and the Elks Lodge No. 494 in Charleroi.

Robert leaves an extensive collection of rare books and letters of famous people in the world of literature to West Virginia University’s Rare Book Collection at the Wise Library. The family will be receiving friends on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Schrock-Hogan Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 226 Fallowfield Ave. , Charleroi.

A funeral mass will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. in The Historic Church of Saint Peter Church, 300 Shaffner Ave. , Brownsville, celebrated by the Rev. Timothy J. Kruthaupt.

Interment will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Carroll Township. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www. schrock-hogan.com.
