Obituary for Robert Wayne Ratledge Robert Wayne Ratledge, 76, of Niota, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Oct. 27, after a battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was at his home surrounded by his family.
Wayne was born on Jan. 4, 1942, in Friendsville, Tenn. , to Rev.
J.T. and Mary Ratledge. Wayne is preceded in death by his parents Rev. J.T. and Mary Ratledge; in-laws Glenn and Callie Mae Dawson; brothers Glenn and Ann Ratledge, Gene Ratledge, Hugh Dean and Imogene Ratledge; sister Ann Ratledge Hedge; children David Ratledge and Gail Ratledge Cranfield; and granddaughter Chassity Ratledge.
Wayne retired from Tennessee Valley Authority in construction and then as a welder from Johnson Controls. He loved spending time with his family and sought the solitude of fishing, hunting and reading a good Western book. He is survived by his wife of 55 years Merlene Dawson Ratledge; son Steve Ratledge and girlfriend Penny Shoemaker of Sweetwater; daughter and son-in-law Ginger and Tim Layman of Niota; son-in-law Rodney Cranfield of Sweetwater; grandchildren Dustin and Jessica McCosh of Ooltewah, Cody and Michelle Layman of Athens, Craig and Whitney Ratledge of Athens, Bethanie and Chris Rose of Madisonville and Chase Layman and girlfriend Destiny McCammon of Niota; great-grandchildren Hayden and Nathan Layman of Athens, and Della McCosh of Ooltewah.
In addition, he leaves behind several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers are Dustin McCosh, Cody Layman, Craig Ratledge, Chase Layman, Hunter Ballew, Roger Housewright and Justin Vineyard. The family is grateful for an outpouring of support from friends and family, and wishes to express sincere appreciation to the Pat Summit Clinic at UT Medical Center, Dr. Johnny Carter and Hospice of Chattanooga’s Athens Office.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 30, at Kyker Funeral Homes in Sweetwater. The funeral service will immediately follow with Rev.
Gerald Perry and Rev. Bill Dawson. Internment will be at Mount Pisgah Baptist Church on Wednesday, Oct.
