Roland Edward Long May 6, 1919 – May 18, 2018 Roland Graduated from this life two weeks after celebrating his 99th birthday surrounded by his loving family. He passed peacefully at home in his sleep which was a great wish of his. He is survived by the love of his life Phyllis Wood Long, six children, nine grandchildren, (three of which he raised from birth) and four young great- grandchildren Roland always took great pride in his Pennsylvania Dutch heritage.
He was born and raised on a small farm in Millerstown, Pennsylvania by Cloyd E. Long and Mary E. Chubb Long. He now joyfully joins them along with his five siblings. At the age of 16 Roland graduated high school and by 19 he had become a teacher.
Later he would serve as principle at King and Whitesides Elementary School’s to many adoring students. He received his master’s degree from the University Of Utah and continued his education for many years afterwards. He loved his profession and lived for education and knowledge.
He reluctantly retired for the second time at the age of 87. Roland taught art classes to adults in the evening as a hobby, he was an avid and talented artist. He played the guitar, autoharp, and mouth organ, (harmonica).
He was a real life MacGyver! He built a house, fixed cars, and if given a paperclip, masking tape, pipe cleaner, and some wood, he would build a boat that you could cross the ocean in. However, you would be terrified the whole time!
Roland served in the Air Corps as a lieutenant from 1941-1946. During which time he met his eternal companion Phyllis, after a three week courtship, they were married. three days later he was deployed for three years.
They would write each other every day as he traveled the world in service to his country. Throughout their long life together he continued leaving her love letters, notes, and even the occasional poem. Roland was raised Lutheran but converted to the LDS religion in 1943.
He was married in the Salt Lake Temple and served many callings from the church. He was devout and incredibly spiritual; he loved serving the lord his entire life. He had a true gift with people.
Roland loved being the center of attention, was a great comedian, and had a contagious smile and laugh! He collected friends and fans everywhere he went. He was an active member of the Kaysville City community and supported the local buffets every chance he got, to the very end.
He impacted countless people’s lives in countless ways. He was a mentor, a guide, an inspiration, a friend, and an everyday Hero! Those he leaves behind will deeply miss him but will always remember him.
His legacy lives on and continues to grow. His mortal journey may have come to an end but his eternal journey has just begun. Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 24, 2018 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist’s Kaysville Mortuary, 400 N. Main St., Kaysville, Utah.
Friends may visit with family from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the mortuary. Interment, with full military honors will be held at the Kaysville Cemetery, 500 Crestwood Rd. , with a reception to follow at the Kaysville 12th Ward on Crestwood Rd.
