Rosalie Ann Little Thunder (Red Elk) Rosalie Ann (Red Elk) Little Thunder was born on April 18, 1962 in Pine Ridge, SD to Steven and Vivian (Chipps) Red Elk. Rosalie made her journey to the Spirit World on March 26, 2018 at the Bennett County Hospital in Martin, SD. “With quilts literally sitting on her doorstep, Rosalie Red Elk-Little Thunder upgraded her quilting business thanks to a micro-loan (under $5,000.

00)from Lakota Funds. Rosalie had seen an ad in the newspaper about three years before she started her business. She had nine years of experience in quilting for a manufacturer.

When her husband, Ron Little Thunder developed health issues, it was time to stay home and start her own business. Rosalie and Ron attended a six month course on how to develop a business plan. Once approved, the financing from the Lakota Funds allowed them to stitch a plan together to purchase a long arm machine and start-up supplies.

The financing available through Lakota Funds gave her a peace of mind as she pieced together business. Rosalie stated that working with Lakota Funds “Made a dream possible”. Her long arm quilting machine allows her to market her creations as authentic Native American made quilts.

Rosalie quilts between 20 to 25 star quilts a month. One of her goals was to craft affordable star quilts for traditional Lakota ceremonies. For a star quilt to qualify as ceremonial, no labels, tags or advertising can be attached.

All her ceremonial quilts are hand-made by Lakota people using traditional standards. Rosalie hired two or three other people to work when the orders started piling up. Eighty percent of her star quilts are ceremonial and she has shipped quilts as far away as Rhode Island”.

Rosalie was preceded in death by her parents, Steven and Vivian Red Elk; brothers, Roger and Harlan Red Elk; and sisters, Lydia Red Elk and Marlene Red Elk-Tools.
