“John” Royce Earl Johannes Juntunen of Indian River passed away on December 11, 2018 at his home. He lived with Sisu in his heart and fought hard. John was born on March 23, 1934 in Atlantic Mine, MI, the son of John Juntunen and Hilda (Kemppainen) Juntunen.

He grew up in Tapiola and attended high school at Tapiola Dolle Agricultural School. In 1961 he married Rosemary Williams in Detroit, MI. John proudly served his country in the US Army.

He fought during the Post Korean Conflict era and was stationed in Korea and Japan, serving four years finishing as a Sergeant. John loved to garden and grew an expansive garden full of sunflowers earning the nickname “Mr. Sunflower” by some of the locals. He also enjoyed crossword puzzles, fishing, hunting, and sports including the Redwings and the Tigers.

John loved feeding the birds, rabbits, and ducks that would come onto his property. He was the owner and operator of Indian River Bronze for 25 years. After his retirement from that he was a slot attendant at Victories Casino (later renamed Odawa) for 10 years.

John cherished his daughter’s dog Finn and cat Pikku. John’s father came to the United States directly from Finland, making John a first generation American who was extraordinarily proud of his Finnish ancestry. John is survived by his wife Rosemary Juntunen, children John Juntunen, Todd R. (Sue) Juntunen, Tammie (Carl) Sandel, and Shawn Juntunen, grandchildren Aaron J. Cooper and Jarred M. Cooper, and many nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his parents John and Hilda Juntunen as well as his parents-in-law John and Evelyn Buckles. He was also preceded by his siblings Ruth, Lee, Phil, Helen, Gilbert and Wilbur. A memorial service for John will be held at a later date.
