Sammy Lee Matthews, 71, passed away Tuesday, October 23, 2018 surrounded by his family. He was born December 26, 1946 in Norfolk, VA to the late Sam Hoyt Matthews and Ruby Lee Gupton Matthews King. Sammy retired from US Foods after 31 years of service.

His love for his family was boundless, his happiest days were when his children and grandchildren were born. Sammy had a servant’s heart and never met a stranger. A funeral service will be held 11:00 am, Saturday, October 27, 2018 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service Chapel, 944 Old Knight Road, Knightdale, 27545.

The family will receive relatives and friends prior to the service from 10:00 to 11:00 am at the funeral home. Graveside service 3:00 pm, Saturday, October 27, 2018 at Forest Hill Cemetery, 350 N. First Street Nashville, NC 27856. Surviving: wife of 51 years, Elizabeth “Lib” Morgan Matthews; daughter, Tamela “Tami” Matthews Hargrove (John) of Zebulon; son, Robert Bradley Matthews of Raleigh; grandchildren: John Horton Hargrove, Matthew Charles Hargrove; brother, Jimmy Matthews (Raye) of Nashville, sisters: Patsy Griffin of Advance, Barbara Faulkner (Perry) of Louisburg; brother-in-law, Marshall Baines of Nashville; many beloved aunts, uncles, nieces & nephews.

In addition to his parents, Sammy was preceded in death by his sister, Joanne Baines, brother-in-law, James Griffin and step-father, James King. Flowers are welcome or memorial contributions may be made to Knightdale Baptist Church, P.O. Box 21, Knightdale, NC 27545.
