Obituary for Shirly May English Shirley May English Shirley May (nee Hutton) English, 90, passed away on September 5, 2018 at 1:29 pm. Shirley was born at home in rural Coal City, Illinois on August 18, 1928, the daughter of the late William E. and Martha (nee Schmitt) Hutton. Shirley graduated from Lewistown High School in Lewistown, Missouri in 1945; the attended Blackburn College, Carbondale, IL for one year before entering Blessing Hospital School of Nursing in Quincy, IL.
After completing Nurses’ Training at Blessing, she passed the national exam for Registered Nurses and received her license to practice as a Registered Nurse. Shirley moved to Normal, Illinois and worked at Brokaw Hospital for 30 years. Shirley married Richard “Jerry” English on November 18, 1950 in Braceville, Illinois.
They were blessed with one son, David Joe English, and two daughters, Susan Elizabeth English Wilcox and Mary Kay English; three granddaughters, Amanda English McKinzie, Kathryn English Ritchey and Kendra English Millay; two great grand children Thomas Ritchey and Janna Ritchey. All survive. She was proceeded in death by her brothers Wilbur, Herman and John and her sisters Virginia, Ruth and Elizabeth.
She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Normal and 50 year member of the Felicity Chapter #387 Order of Eastern Star, and served in the capacity of Worthy Matron. She loved her family and gardening, she was a passionate fan of NASCAR and Jeff Gordon. She never knew a stranger and treated everyone like family.
The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses of the Progressive Unit at Bromenn for their care. And a special thanks to the staff and caregivers of ResCare who cared for her and became part of her family. Funeral services for Shirley will be at the R.W. Patterson Funeral Home in Braidwood on September 10, 2018 at 10:30.
Interment will follow at the Braceville Gardner Cemetery in Braceville, IL. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Memorials can be made to the Will and Grundy County Genealogical Society or Calvary Baptist Church, Normal, IL.
