Our loving mother, Shurma Johnson Merritt, returned to her Heavenly Father to be with her loving husband Monte on September 25, 2018. Shurma was born to Orson Albert Johnson and Cora Minerva Leavitt on September 10, 1929 in Smoot, Wyoming. She was raised on her dad’s ranch in Smoot, Wyoming and graduated from high school in Star Valley.

She married her sweetheart, Monte Merritt, on June 15, 1947 in Afton, Wyoming and their marriage was sealed in the Idaho Falls Temple on June 4, 1948. They lived on a small farm in Afton, Wyoming until 1956 when they moved to Layton, Utah. Shurma enjoyed tatting, crocheting, scrapbooking, embroidering, working on genealogy, gardening, canning, making homemade bread, and reading.

She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and loved the Lord. She served in many various church callings. Surviving are her children: Marsha Merritt (Atkinson, LeCannon, Knight), Layton, Utah; Kathy Workman (Larry), Scottsdale, Arizona; Sheryl Merritt (Morfin, Hawkins), Clearfield, Utah; Denise Robins (Clay), Syracuse, Utah; Robyn Delight (David), Huntsville, Utah; and Monte David Merritt (Jamie), Clinton, Utah; her sister Marie Johnson Kearl (Burdett), Syracuse, Utah.

She was the beloved grandmother to 26 grandchildren; 59 great-grandchildren; and 18 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son Craig; daughter Linda Miller (Robert); her husband Monte; her parents, Orson and Cora Johnson; her sisters Venna Kennington-Barrus; Raeona Smith; Ella Ann Spencer; and her brother Lorin A. Johnson (aka L.A.), and one great-grandson, Colton Paul Scott. Funeral services will be held Monday, October 1, 2018 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No.

Fairfield Road. Friends may visit family Monday from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. at the mortuary. Interment, Lindquist’s Memorial Park at Layton, 1867 No.
