Obituary for Sister Elaine Deasy Sister Elaine Deasy, a member of the Sisters of Mercy Northeast Community died peacefully on Monday, June 18, 2018 at St. Mary Home. She was born in Hartford on July 12, 1945, the daughter of Robert and Mildred Deasy. She received her BA and MA degrees from Saint Joseph College (now University of Saint Joseph) and joined the Sisters of Mercy in 1968.
As a Sister of Mercy for just three months short of 50 years, Sister Elaine served in a variety of ministries, lived in many communities and considered it all gift. Of particular significance were Lumen Christi in Benson, VT, Mercy by the Sea in Madison, CT and most recently, York Correctional Center with the Women of Willow Community. Sister Elaine was a gifted and respected spiritual and retreat director and musician who touched the lives of countless individuals.
Her compassion, creativity, empathy, humor and wisdom were qualities to be admired. Her faith, prayerfulness and love of music will live on through her recently produced CD, Our Name is Mercy, Our Spirit is Compassion. Sister Elaine is survived by her brothers Robert & his wife Janet and Thomas & his wife Teresa; her nieces and nephew and their families – Adria and David Giordano and their children Gabriella and Francesca; Ann Marie and Brien Gallagher and their daughter, Alexandra; Melissa and Christopher Good and their children Thomas, Lily, Caden and Jack; Marlene and Joseph Prespare and their children, Adam and Luke; Paul and Susy Deasy and their children Tate and Piper; her Sisters in Community and special friend and caregiver Suzanne Lavoie, a Companion in Mercy.
Special thanks to Dr. Susan Rabinowe, the Comprehensive Women’s Health Center at Saint Francis Hospital and Masonicare Home Health and Hospice. All services will be held in the Connor Chapel at the University of St. Joseph in West Hartford on Friday, June 22. A Mass of the Resurrection will celebrate Sister Elaine’s life at 12:00 noon preceded by calling hours from 10:00am to 11:45am.
Burial will take place in St. Mary Cemetery at 2:30pm. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a donation in Sister Elaine’s memory are asked to consider the Sisters of Mercy Northeast Community, 25 Prescott Street, West Hartford, CT 06110. Sheehan-Hilborn-Breen Funeral Home, West Hartford has care of arrangements.
