Tenys’ Obituary Tenys Edward Parr was born September 29, 1922 in Purdy, Oklahoma to Bevley Burton Parr and Viola Ethel (Lee) Parr. He went home to be with Jesus on January 10, 2019. Tenys’ childhood was spent in Purdy attending the Purdy School, farming, and helping his parents who ran the Post Office and the Purdy Store.
He was a proud member of the Future Farmers of America and enjoyed showing Berkshire hogs, Quarter horses, and Cattle. He received a State and American Farmer degree and won 1stplace in Oklahoma’s first Quarter Horse Show in 1948. He attended OSU from 1941-1943 and 1946-1948.
The interruption was due to his service in World War II, where he drove a tank in the Army. He took an Agricultural class in England and taught a class to veterans while in Germany. After his return to the United States he graduated from OSU and then returned back home to Purdy where he married Louella Giffin.
They had one daughter, Charlotte. They farmed and ranched many years until Tenys retirement in 1987. Tenys and Lou were members of the Lindsay United Methodist Church where they served for many years.
Tenys taught Sunday School and served on many of their committees. He was chairman of the board in 1957 when the new church was built. Tenys loved his community and also served on the Lindsay Board of Education for 18 years; and served on the district and county fairboards.
Tenys dedicated more than 25 years to the Rural Electrification Program, and retired from the REC Board in 1992, having only missed two board meetings in 25 years. He was appointed to the board in 1967, being president of the 1973-1989. He was also president of the OAEC Board from 1977-1979.
He was inducted into the Oklahoma Association of Electric Cooperatives Hall of Fame in 1993. His hobbies were golf, golf and even more golf! Left to cherish his memory is his beloved daughter: Charlotte Beth Lowe and her husband Eddie Lowe, one granddaughter: Julie Elizabeth Martin and her husband Todd Martin and their daughters: Jaycee Lou Martin and his namesake Jayda Parr Martin, one nephew: B.T. Ferguson and wife Jana Ferguson, several great nieces and nephews, and a goddaughter: Lynda Simmons-Wolfe.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Louella Parr, his parents: Bevley and Viola Parr, his grandson: Evan Lowe, his sister: Christine Ferguson, and his nephew: Don Ferguson. A Funeral Service to honor the life of Tenys is set to begin at 10:00 A.M. on Monday, January 14, 2019 at the United Methodist Church in Lindsay, Oklahoma with Rev. Jackie Banks officiating.
He will be laid to his final rest following the service at the Green Hill Cemetery in Lindsay, Oklahoma. Services are under the direction of Scott and Angel Wilbourn of Boydston-Wilbourn Funeral Home in Lindsay, Oklahoma. Condolences may be made to the family online at www.
