Valerie’s Obituary Miss Valerie Phillips of Winston-Salem, North Carolina eternal rest began on April 20, 2019. Miss Phillips was born on July 25, 1931 in Winston-Salem to the late Garret Elroy Phillips, Sr. and Mary Lander Phillips. Miss Phillips graduated from Atkin High Schools in the Class of 1947, and continued her education at Hampton University (Institute), where received a degree in Early Childhood Education.

Miss Phillips was a patient person, loving and caring and found that the best use of her talents was teaching and caring for God’s children birth to elementary school age. Upon graduation she moved to New York City to start her career working for Mayfield Nursery School. After more than two decades in New York Miss Phillips decided to return to Winston-Salem, North Carolina and open and own her own nursery which she did until her retirement.

Miss Phillips was a Gold Star Member and member of 50+ years of First Baptist Church where she attended regularly until her declining health prevailed. Miss Phillips as her health declined, she moved her residency from the family home to Somerset Court at University Place where she lived and enjoyed the fellowship of others and their caring staff. Those remaining to cherish her memory, one brother Garret Elroy Phillips, Jr. of Winston-Salem, NC; one sister-in-law, Helen Peacock Phillips of Winston-Salem, NC, Two nephews George M. Phillips, Jr. (Dorinda) of Winston-Salem, NC and Gregory M. Phillips (Faye) of Houston, TX.

Two nieces Eleanor Phillips-Phipps of Winston-Salem, NC and Mary Helen Evans (Robert) of Kernersville, NC; five great nieces and nephews Tracy Dixon of Charlotte, NC; Geoffrey Phillips of Houston TX. ; Jamal Phillips (Christine) of Winston-Salem, NC; Jihan Phillips of Winston-Salem, NC; Jordan Phillips of Baltimore, Maryland and Garret B. Phipps of Greensboro, NC. ; and five great- great nieces and nephews.

Ms. Phillips adored and devoted herself to all her nieces and nephews as they were her own children. The Phillips family would like to thank the administration and staff of Somerset Court and Trellis Supportive Care (Hospice) for their compassionate and professional care given to our love one. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 am at First Baptist Church Highland Ave.

Friday April 26, 2019. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:30 am-11:00 am at the church Friday.
