She was born October 25, 1927 in Coffee County to William Henry Free and Clyde Davis Free. She married the love of her life Grant Rhodes on October 17, 1945.

Velma worked as a financial secretary with the First Baptist Church, Reynolds, and Morrow County School Systems. After retirement Grant and Velma made the decision to come back to Florala where they both grew up and still had family. Velma became a member of Easter Star in 1962 receiving her 50 year pin in 2012 .

She was a member of Covington Chapter #441, Order of the Eastern Star. She was elected Worthy Grand Maytron in 1995. She had been an active member of the Eastern Star, until ill health forced her to slow down the past few years.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Florala. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Grant Rhodes; father William Henry Free; mother, Clyde Davis Free. Velma is survived by sons, Duane Rhodes of Foley, AL and Martin Rhodes and wife Janet of Brooks, GA; grandchildren, Brooks, Michelle, Nikki and Alicia; 6 great grandchildren, sister-in-laws, Sybil Mickler Mason and Dorene Fountain; nieces, Martha Mickler Wright and Dell Fountain; nephews, Crawford Braxton Fountain and Don Fountain, as well as an abundance of extended love ones including numerous great nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Velma Free Rhodes will be 2PM Tuesday January 22, 2019 at Evans Funeral Home with Charlie Lennard and Wade Farmer officiating. Visitation will be 1 hour before services. Interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery with Order of Eastern Star Rites.

In lieu of flowers memorials in memory of Velma Rhodes can be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 23593 5th Ave, Florala, AL.
