VERINA ANDERSON September 15, 1916 – January 16, 2019 Share this obituary Send Flowers View/Sign Guest Book Verina Anderson, 102, of DeKalb, Illinois, formerly of Malta, died Wednesday, January 16, 2019, Pine Acres Rehab and Living Center in DeKalb. She was born September 15, 1916, in Salem, Indiana, the daughter of Robert and Jessie (Applegate) Lockenour. Verina married Lyle Stanton Anderson on March 16, 1939, at the First Lutheran Church in DeKalb.

Verina attended a number of country schools and was a graduate of DeKalb Township High School. She enjoyed working outdoors, farming with her husband, sharing in raising livestock (cattle, pigs and cows), growing alfalfa, oats and corn, raising chickens and selling eggs to her many customers. She was successful raising, canning and freezing much of the family food from her garden.

Verina enjoyed sewing and refinishing and recovering furniture. Over the years, she also enjoyed walking, yoga, swimming and exercise classes. Verina was a life-long member of the First Lutheran Church, participating in the Projects Group and the funeral lunch committee.

She also helped at the Salvation Army food pantry. She is survived by her three daughters, Dolores (Tom) Donnelly of Malta, Joyce Gardner and Barbara Anderson both of DeKalb; grandchildren, Bernard (Deanna) Donnelly, Richard (Cassie) Donnelly, Elizabeth (Joseph) Pedersen, Angela Donnelly, Lyle Gardner and Margaret ‘Meg’ Gardner; and her great-grandchildren, Nicholas (Ellie) Donnelly and Courtney Donnelly, Caitlin, Keegan and Travis Donnelly, and Christopher and Cameron Pedersen. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle; her five younger siblings, Kenneth (Wilma ‘Bim’) Lockenour, Sylvia (Merrill) Anderson, Margaret (Denzel) Smith, Garriott Lockenour and Lloyd (Betty) Lockenour; and son-in-law, John Gardner.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 22, 2019, at First Lutheran Church, 324 North 3rd Street, DeKalb, with the Rev. Dr. Janet Hunt officiating. Burial will follow at Malta Cemetery in Malta.

Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 22, at the church.
