Virgil Delbert Poer, 83, of North Vernon passed away on Monday, September 3, 2018, at Schneck Medical Center in Seymour. Born August 12, 1935, in Jennings County, Mr. Poer was the son of Walter Francis and Agatha Grace (Biehle) Poer. He married Jackie Bingham on November 25, 1962, at the First Christian Church in North Vernon.

She survives. Mr. Poer was a 1955 graduate of Vernon High School and served in the National Guard stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, Grayling, Michigan and Ft Knox, Kentucky. He worked maintenance, assembly and testing for Cummins Engine Company in Columbus for 31 ½ years before retiring in 1987 and worked carryout for Jay C Food Store for 20 years retiring in 2015.

He was a member of First Christian Church in North Vernon where he was a former deacon and elder. Mr. Poer enjoyed gardening, cutting firewood, camping, fishing, going on cruises and time in Florida. He especially loved the time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Surviving with his wife, Jackie Poer are, son, Randy Poer of North Vernon; daughter, Deborah (Rick) Karl of Mill Spring, North Carolina; brother, Gene (Mary) Poer of North Vernon; sister, Frances (Don) Graper of North Vernon; grandchildren, Doug (Taylor) Yeary, Laura (Brant Hunley) Pate, and Kaitlin Yeary all of North Vernon, Richard Karl of Geneva, Illinois, Zach Karl of Spartanburg, South Carolina, Jennifer (D.J.) Koqut of Lombard, Illinois, Paul Sanders of Lafayette and Sylvia (William Waltz) Poer of Austin; great-grandchildren, Callela and Halina Waltz of Austin. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter-in-law, Connie Poer; brothers Harold and James Poer; and sister, Faye Pendleton. A funeral service will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 6, 2018, at the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North Vernon with the Rev.

Ron Bridgewater officiating. Family and friends may call at the funeral home from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 5, 2018, and one hour prior to the service on Thursday. Burial will be in the Vernon Cemetery.

Memorials may be made through the funeral home to Schneck Hospice.
