Obituary of Virginia Hughson Virginia Smith Hughson, 94, passed away on September 12, 2018 in Salem, Virginia. Virginia was born in Roanoke on July 26, 1924 to William and Juanita (Lucy) Smith. She married Robert S. Hughson and had three daughters, Judy, Anne and MaryLynne.
Virginia worked at Kress’, Appalachian Power, started her own realty company with friends-Blevins and Hughson Realty, opened Cottage Carpet and Wall Coverings, opened Rainbow Tours & Travel and Good Home Health Care in her later years, enabling her to care for husband at home. She was an active member in the Eastern Star, member of Melrose Baptist Church where she volunteered countless hours in the kitchen serving Wednesday night meals for years. She loved planning and going on trips, shopping, Braves baseball, Hokies football and hearing stories of her great grandkids and their sports stories.
Virginia suffered with macular degeneration for the past 20+ years that slowed her down but didn’t stop her! She had a mind unparalleled to many people much younger than her 94 years! The last four years she resided at the Richfield Nursing Facility in Salem.
Virginia is survived by her daughter, Anne Cook of Daleville, Va, grandson, William Faison lll of New York, NY, grand-daughters, Jill C. Thomas and husband, Terry, of Charlotte, NC and Courtney Faison of Hurdle Mills, NC. Three great-grandchildren, Reagan, Owen and Morgan Thomas of Charlotte, NC. A niece, Joyce Poore and husband, Jeff of Roanoke, VA and nephew, Bill & Barbara Smith of Salem, VA.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, William and Lucy Smith; husband, Bob, sister, Edith Leonard; daughters, Judy Woody & husband, Bob, of Hurdle Mills, NC and MaryLynne Hughson of Hardy, VA. Son-in-law, David Cook of Daleville, VA. Many thanks to Alice and Lois for visiting each week and loving her so much; her niece Joyce and husband Jeff for always visiting, checking in each week and being there and loving her through the years.
Her good friends, Tabbie, Judy and Gene Bennett, Kate and Carson Harmon, Jimmy Blankenship for being such a good neighbor and friend for so many years and to all of those that helped MaryLynne take care of her in Hardy. Thanks to Good Samaritan Hospice for coming in at the time of her decline and really making sure she had excellent care and helping her family during this time. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until noon on Friday, September 28, 2018 at Simpson Funeral Home 5160 Peters Creek Road. A graveside service will follow at 12:30 pm. in Sherwood Memorial Park.
