Wanda A. Schumacher, of Pittsfield, died unexpectedly June 8, 2018, one day after celebrating her 90th birthday with family members. She was born June 7, 1928, in her family home on West Main Street in Youngsville. Her parents were Glenn W. and Mildred P. (Ehrhart) Finlan.

During World War II she trained to become a voluntary airplane spotter for the Aircraft Warning Service of the U.S. Army. This service, mainly comprised of women, logged and reported sightings of any aircraft to prevent enemy attack. In 1947 she graduated from Youngsville High School, where she took the commercial course.

Following graduation she worked two jobs: part-time office clerk at the defunct Youngsville Courier and part-time waitress at the long-gone Anderson’s Restaurant. One night after her restaurant shift, a customer, Gerald M. Schumacher, decided to walk her home. He became the love of her life.

The two married on June 22, 1951, at the old St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Irvine. Until she became a fulltime homemaker, Wanda worked for several years in the shipping department of the New Process Co., now Blair Corp. , in Warren.

Wanda enjoyed traveling, hunting and hiking with Gerald, who preceded her death on Nov. 29, 1999. She is survived by Jerilynn M. Schumacher and Kenneth E. Vasko, her daughter and son-in-law from Warriors Mark, Pa.

She is also survived by Kurt A. Schumacher and Rita L. Los, her son and daughter-in-law from Hamburg, N.Y. Her grandchildren include Chad T. Los Schumacher (and his wife Emily Slegel Los Schumacher) of Hamilton, N.J. and Cory R. Los Schumacher of New Port Richey, Fla. Visitation for family and close friends will be from 10 to 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 13, at the McKinney Funeral Home, 54 W. Main St., Youngsville. Open visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to noon, followed by a short service and internment at the Youngsville Cemetery.

Wanda loved cats. Her final year was brightened by the appearance of a stray cat and four kittens, who joined her already two-cat household. While flowers will be accepted, the family prefers donations be made to Paws Along the River, 212 Elm St., Warren, PA 16365.
