Wayne’s Obituary Wayne Hoyt Shoaf, 97, passed away February 23, 2019 at The Elms at Abbotswood in Greensboro, NC. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 1, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Tyro, NC, where he was a life-long member. There will be a reception immediately following the service at the church.
Wayne was born September 16, 1921, to the late Guy and Lola Shoaf. He grew up in the Tyro community and called that area home for most of his life. He attended Appalachian State University for two years until he was drafted into the Army during WW II, serving with the 88th Infantry for two years in Italy and N. Africa.
He found the 91st Psalm very comforting during the trials and dangers of war. He received an honorable discharge in November 1945 and returned to the Lexington area to begin a long career in banking. Wayne was employed by Industrial Federal Savings Bank (now Hometrust Bank) for more than 60 years.
He was president of the bank until his retirement and continued as Chairman of the Board of Directors. He was involved for many years in trade organization activities on both the state and federal level. He held several terms as a director of the North Carolina League of Savings Institutions and in 1968 was elected president of that group.
He was active in political and legislative matters relating to the banking industry as a member of both the North Carolina League and the United States League Legislative Committees. In 1984, he became the first recipient of the Glenn Troop Award-an honor given for dedicated and diligent involvement on behalf of the Savings and Loan Industry. He was long active in civic affairs.
Wayne was a Davidson County Commissioner for sixteen years and was chosen by his peers as Outstanding County Commissioner in North Carolina in 1965. He was a Trustee at Appalachian State University for twelve years, president of the Lexington Chamber of Commerce, a trustee at Lexington Memorial Hospital, treasurer of the local Infantile Paralysis Chapter at the height of the polio epidemic, and was a member of the Lexington Kiwanis Club and Tyro Lions Club. His love of the Democratic Party was expressed in his active participation in local, state, and national elections.
He was an avid Carolina fan, and could always be counted on to be in the stands, cheering on his beloved Tar Heels. For all of his accomplishments, his family will remember him most as a loving husband and father. He is survived by his wife, Lena Shoaf, to whom he has been married for 70 years.
He has two children-Marianne (Walker) Weatherly and Stephen (Sharon) Shoaf, both of Greensboro. He leaves behind five grandchildren-Chris (Kristina) Weatherly, Laura (Kevin) Gallagher, Caroline Weatherly, Tyler Shoaf, and Troy Shoaf. In October, he had welcomed his first granddaughter, Peyton Weatherly.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Colonel Ellis S. Shoaf, his sister, Charlotte Lyle and brother-in-law Sidney R. Lyle. The family would like to thank the community of Tyro and St. Luke’s Lutheran Church for their love and support, especially over the last ten years. We also extend our deep gratitude to caregiver Betty Hardin, the medical team at Cone Hospital, Hospice Care of Greensboro and the incredible staff at The Elms for their exceptional care and compassion.
