Obituary for William “Bill” Henry Merkle William “Bill” Henry Merkle, 1922 – 2018, formerly of Kenilworth, Deerfield and Northbrook, IL, and a World War II Veteran, peacefully passed away on April 29, 2018. Beloved husband of the late Jean Marilyn Race Merkle; loving father of daughter Marilyn (Tod), sons Bill and Bruce (Craig), and daughter-in-law Kristin. Devoted grandfather of Brooklyn, Jackson, Jane, and Caroline.
Also survived by brother-in-law Robert, sister-in-law Hennie, and nieces and nephews. Pre-deceased by parents William Merkle and Clara Hartke Merkle and brother Richard Merkle. Bill attended New Trier High School, Randolph-Macon College and the University of Illinois and worked as an accountant for many years, finally retiring in his 70s.
Bill enjoyed tennis, swimming and paddle tennis at Tennaqua Swim and Racquet Club, as well as gardening and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He also was an avid sports fan. Bill was a long-time member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Deerfield and the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Northbrook.
A celebration of life to be held in early July. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, www. alz.org.
