Obituary for William “Bill” L. Hughes Mr. William L. Hughes, “Bill”, age 81, of the Central Community of Johnson City, passed away on Tuesday, June 5, 2018, at his home. He was a son of the late George Dewey and Lula Mills Hughes and was born in Carter County. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Dewey Lynn Hughes and Samuel “Buck” Hughes.

Mr. Hughes was retired from Tennessee Eastman Company. He was a member of the Central Community Christian Church where he had served as an Elder and a Trustee. He was also a member of the Watauga Masonic Lodge #622, F and AM and a former member of the Central Volunteer Fire Department.

Mr. Hughes was a devoted, husband, father and grandfather who was interested and involved in the lives of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He liked to garden and was a great music buff. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of fifty-nine years, Charlotte Parks Hughes, of the home; a daughter, Cindy Hughes Burton (Tracy), of Kingsport; a son, William Edward “Eddie” Hughes (Karen), of Elizabethton; four grandchildren, Lindsey Phillips (Daniel), of Greenville, SC; Ryan Burton, (Sarah), of Canton, GA; McKenzie Miller (Matthew), of Elizabethton; Mallory Ward (Dokota), of Kingsport; three very special great-grandchildren, Kyndall “Kit Kat” Miller, of Elizabethton; Greyson Phillips, of Greenville, SC; Charlotte Miller, of Elizabethton; three sisters, Jessie Humphreys, of Johnson City; Nancy Range (Eugene), of Jonesborough; Kay “Cookie” Smith, of Bulls Gap, TN; and a brother, Joseph “Joe” Hughes (Sheila), of Johnson City.

Several nieces and nephews also survive. A service to honor the life of Mr. Hughes will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Friday, June 8, 2018, in the Tetrick Funeral Home, Chapel of Peace, Elizabethton with Mr. Todd Wolfe and Mr. Billy Murphy, Ministers, officiating. Music will be under the direction of Todd and Susie Wolfe.

The eulogy will be delivered by his granddaughter, Lindsey Phillips. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5:00 – 7:00 PM on Friday prior to the service or at the home at other times. The graveside and interment service will be conducted on Saturday, June 9, 2018, at 11:00 AM at Happy Valley Memorial Park.

Active pallbearers will be Bob Clark, Tony McKeehan, Brad Johnson, Bill Turbyfield, Luther Cox, and Bob Hendrix. Honorary pallbearers will be his grandsons, Ryan Burton, Daniel Phillips, Matthew Miller and Dokota Ward. Those wishing to attend are invited to meet the family at the funeral home at 10:15 AM on Saturday to go in procession to the cemetery.
