Obituary for William Ches “Skip” Smith IV William Ches “Skip” Smith IV William Ches “Skip” Smith IV, aged 69 of Augusta, died Monday, June 11, 2018 at University Hospital after a short illness. Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 14, 2018 at The Church of the Holy Comforter, 473 Fury’s Ferry Road, Martinez, Georgia at 10:00 a.m. Reverend Doctor Cynthia Taylor will officiate. Interment will occur at Westover Memorial Park at 2601 Wheeler Road, Augusta, Georgia immediately following the service.

The Smith family will receive friends at Thomas Poteet and Son Funeral Directors, 214 Davis Road, Augusta, Georgia between the hours of 5:00 and 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 13, 2018. Michael Eaton, Darryl Leech, Bob Murray, Joe Riner, Michael Sommers, Mark Wilson, and Byron Mangum will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Milton Martin, Rodney Goff, Paul Harris, and Terry Butler.

Skip Smith was a graduate of the Terry College of Business at The University of Georgia where he was a loyal alum. He began his long and distinguished professional career with State Farm Insurance Company where he served in many capacities to include insurance Agent, Agency Manager, Agency Director and rose within the company to hold the position of Corporate Vice President of Agency, allowing him, first and foremost, to mentor new agents as they started their careers. He completed his career with State Farm doing what he loved best, serving his clients.

With a lifetime of service to his Lord and Savior through many capacities, Skip was most recently active in The Church of the Holy Comforter. He was passionate in his volunteer service to his community as demonstrated by his volunteerism as a member of the Board of Trustees of The Walton Foundation, Inc., an organization that supports programs for those with disabilities in the CSRA and beyond. Serving the Walton Foundation in multiple ways, Skip was often found marrying his lifelong passion for golf while volunteering at coaching clinics for Wounded Warriors and trauma victims while also serving as a volunteer golf course rater with the United State Golf Association.

Skip is survived by his beloved wife, Judy Butler Smith; four children, William Ches Smith V and wife Kim of Athens, Georgia, Elizabeth Smith Hoover and husband Edward of Mexico, Missouri, Butler Kimbrough and Caroline Kimbrough of Augusta, Georgia; mother Dorothy Smith; three grandchildren, Lucy Smith and Ches Smith VI of Athens and Peyton Hoover of Mexico; mother-in-law Doris Butler of Georgetown, South Carolina, and brother-in-law Terry Butler of Georgetown; four sisters and brothers-in-law Kathy and Milton Martin, Augusta, Georgia, Carol and Rodney Goff of Macon, Georgia, Karen Smith and Paul Harris of Neath, Wales, and Lisa Daughtrey of Tifton, Georgia. He was preceded in death by his father, The Rev. Dr. W. Ches Smith, III.
