Mills River – William K. Sharpe, 95, of Mills River, passed away on September 5, 2018. William was a native of Biltmore, born on October 15, 1922, the son of William and Lillian Sharpe. He served in the Merchant Marines during WWII, transporting supplies to England and Russia.

He married Alice Plummer in March of 1945 and settled in New Jersey. William worked as a maintenance engineer for the American Cyanamid Company for over 30 years, first in New Jersey and later in Georgia. After retiring, he moved back to North Carolina, living in Mills River.

William was a Mason and Shriner and particularly enjoyed participating in various Shriners’ activities such as auctions and parades. He liked to fish, play horseshoes and in his later years, doing stained glass work. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Alice; his brother John, and his four sisters, Dorothy, Helen, Ruth and Margaret.

He is survived by his son Paul of Mills River as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Contributions in his memory may be made to Amnesty International, the American Indian College Fund or a charity of one’s choice. “If the sky and sea are black as ink, Our hearts, which you know, are filled with sunbeams”.

Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian in Arden is assisting the family.
