Obituary for Adeline (Rowton) Mays Adeline Rose (Rowton) Mays, age 81, died Saturday, April 14, 2018, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, Kansas. She was born to George A. and Mary (Eder) Rowton at the family homestead, five miles northeast of Leoti, Kansas, on July 15, 1936. Adeline was a member of 4-H, Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Business and Professional Women’s Club, and Grant County Senior Center in Ulysses.

She enjoyed drama and music classes in high school. Adeline attended Sacred Heart Academy, a private Catholic school in Wichita, Kansas, and graduated from Wichita County High School in Leoti in 1954. She attended Brown-Mackie Business College in Nebraska, earned an Associate’s Degree in Business Administration from Crowder College in Missouri, and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Missouri.

Adeline enjoyed reading, garage sales, meeting new people and making friends, and “helping out like a good neighbor”. She worked many jobs to support her family and herself from waiting tables in a café, was a receptionist/assistant in an optometrist office, and a caretaker for Goldie Sullivan and Elizabeth Smith. Preceding Adeline in death were her son-in-law, Jeff Garrett; two brothers, Kenneth Rowton and Keith Rowton; her parents, George and Mary (Eder) Rowton; one nephew, Roy Rowton; and two nieces, Nancy Griem and Vickie Burch.

Survivors include two daughters, Teresa (Sims) Garrett of Ulysses, Kansas, and Jaynelle (Duncan) Boden and husband Daniel of Hughesville, Missouri; one son, John Sims III “Jack” of Baxter Springs, Kansas; grandchildren, Mark Mader of Blackwell, Oklahoma, C.J. Macfee of Lanagan, Missouri, and Clarissa Hatfield and husband Matt of Rocky Comfort, Missouri; great-grandchildren, RJ Mader of Ulysses, Kansas, Joshua and Mattison Hatfield of Rocky Comfort, Missouri, and Dominic Macfee of Anderson, Missouri; two sisters, Georgia Griem and husband Herman of Leoti, Kansas, and Lyla Kay Burch and husband Lester of Hartshorne, Oklahoma; one brother, Jim Rowton and wife Frankie of Leoti, Kansas; sister-in-law, Mrs. Keith (Monica) Rowton of Ulysses, Kansas; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends who will remember her by the nick name “Rosie”. Family inurnment will take place at a later date. Memorial contributions may be given to Adeline Mays Memorial Fund in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant Ave, Ulysses, KS 67880.
