Alice Cheney Saunders Our dear Mother, Alice Cheney Saunders returned back to her heavenly home on February 10, 2019. She was born October 30, 1923 in Ririe, Idaho, the third child of Austin John Cheney and Carrie Alene Pincock Cheney. She lived those early years in various areas throughout Idaho including: Ririe, Sugar City, Rexburg, Springfield, Pincock Springs, Basalt, and Shelly.
She graduated from Aberdeen High School in 1942, then moved to Ogden, Utah to attend Business School. Shortly thereafter she met Lawrence David Saunders. It wasn’t long before Alice captured his heart and became the love of his life.
They were married by family friend, David O. McKay in the Salt Lake Temple on November 18, 1943. Theirs is a love story which lasted for more than 68 years here in mortality. Lawrence and Alice are the parents of nine children who they raised in and around the greater Ogden area, spending over 50 of their years together as stalwarts in Harrisville.
Their children are: Darla Dee Saunders (Santa Clara), Jeneen (Terry) Gardner (Mt. Green), Karen (Mike) Doutre (Ivins), David (Laura) Saunders (Liberty), Cheryl (Dean) Hall (both deceased), Alene (Scott) Chambers (North Ogden), Sheila (Brett) Lewis (Eden), Mary Alice (Richard) Dredge (Plain City) and Dean (Cheryl) Saunders (Weber County). They have 34 grandchildren, and 61 ½ great-grandchildren.
Alice has been a life-long member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints serving many years in both her Ward Primary, and Relief Society organizations as president and in various other positions within both organizations. She and her husband were called together to serve as missionaries in the Australia, Sydney Mission as leadership missionaries; and the Arizona, Tempe Mission where she was the Mission Secretary. She was an ordinance worker in the Ogden Temple for over 10 years.
She was a member of Daughters of Utah Pioneers for most of her life, serving in various positions and participating in their many service projects. Alice and Lawrence were able to travel extensively. They visited the South Seas, the Far East, the Middle East and Mediterranean countries, the Holy Land and throughout the Americas.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents and siblings: Gwendlyn Grover, Bryce John Cheney and Don P. Cheney (Anna Mae); daughter and son-in-law Cheryl Ann Saunders and H. Dean Hall; and great-grandson Cy Bartruff. She is survived by her siblings Carol McKinley, Larry (Joan) Cheney, and Richard Wayne (Mary Sue) Cheney; and her other eight children and the families of all nine. She wanted to thank all of the wonderful caregivers who showed her such love and devotion, especially her daughter Alene and son-in-law Scott; her special friend and hospice nurse, Julie Lee and the CNAs who served her diligently.
For each she was most grateful. She also wished to thank the North Ogden 21st and Harrisville 1st and 2nd Ward members who have provided such support, friendship and love over the years. Hers was a life of love and devotion to family, to her Father in Heaven and His Beloved Son, and as an example of goodness and kindness to all.
She will be deeply missed! Funeral services will be held at 1:30 pm on Saturday, February 16, 2019 at the Harrisville 1st Ward, 435 West Harrisville Rd (Hwy 89), where viewings will be held on Friday, February 15th from 6 to 8 p.m. and prior to the service Saturday from 12:15 to 1:10 p.m. Interment Ogden City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the Susan G Komen or Jon Huntsman Cancer Institutes or any ward missionary fund.
