Allan M. Beattie, 85, of Upper Burrell, entered eternal life on Monday, June 4, 2018. If you are about to throw your panty hose away, stop… Consider Allan M. Beattie. If you are a really good friend, you know him as Bootie.

Allan enlisted in the Navy in December 1952 and served on USS Coates in the Korean War. He served 4 years and during this time he found the love of his life, Louise Armistice Predebon Beattie. They married on October 21, 1954.

He was employed at Westinghouse for 38 years as the lead maintenance man. That was his title, but in reality, he installed automic reactors in submarines and power plants, to name a few of his duties. He also was a partner in a landscaping business with his childhood friend, Robert Buss.

Their claim to fame was maintaining the grass for the Steelers practice fields. We were blessed to learn many valuable lessons from him during his 85 years. Among them: Never ever throw away old panty hose.

(They were good for tying tomato plants. ) Do the crossword puzzle every day. (It keeps your mind sharp.

) Dance and sing. (It makes you happy. ) And always close the door and shut off the lights.

(Don’t ever waste. ) Those who have taken his lessons to heart will continue to ensure that a cold beer or a glass of strong wine is a must. (And he will drink one with you.

) Above all, he loved his family, loved his relatives and friends and was always willing to lend a hand or loan a piece of equipment to a friend in need. He thought of himself as “Upper Burrell Rental”. (Those still having outstanding rentals, please return.

) He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Louise Beattie, and always willing to share with anyone, his family: Keith Beattie (wife Debbie and grandchildren Brian and Derek); Kristine Beattie Bates ( husband Bob and grandchildren Jennifer and Sean); Michael Beattie (wife Colleen and grandchildren Rena (husband Garrett), Michela and Cassandra); Beth Ann Beattie Knepshield (husband David and grandchildren Ian, Claire, Addison and Grace) and Allan (wife Kristen and grandchildren Allan and Paige). He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Vera and Thomas; and three brothers, Dick, Lee and Blake, whom he loved dearly; also his longtime canine compadres Herk and the infamous Petey Beattie. Family and friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the FRANK F. GIGLER FUNERAL HOME, 2877 Leechburg Road, Lower Burrell, PA 15068, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, followed by full military honors at the funeral home, by the Vandergrift Veterans Honor Guard.

Burial is private.
