Obituary for Amelia Jones CONCORD- Amelia Maxwell Jones departed this life surrounded by her loving family on August 29, 2018. Amelia was born June 3, 1931 in Decatur, Georgia to her parents, the late Reverend Marvin and Nell Maxwell. She was raised in Griffin, Georgia with her three sisters: Carol Imogene “Imo” Collins, and Sarah Ann “Sam” Arnold, and the late Barbara June “Beegie” Searcy .
Amelia met her husband of 65 years, the late Dr. Clayton Jones. while in nursing school in Memphis. TN.
They moved to Concord in 1958 to raise their family. Amelia was very active in her community, selflessly volunteering for numerous organizations and was recognized for her work with many honors. Not only was she recognized for 25 years of service with Meals on Wheels, Amelia also helped to establish Hospice in Cabarrus County and started Reach for Recovery for breast cancer survivors.
As if that was not enough to keep her busy, she spent countless hours at the election poles greeting voters and volunteered on every school committee for the 30 years that her children were in public school. One of Amelia’s most notable accomplishments was receiving the President’s Volunteer Service Award from President Obama in 2013. Amelia’s love and outreach also extended to her church family.
At Central United Methodist Church, she was voted Layperson of the Year in 2005, she engaged in mission work, church history and renovations, was an active Circle member, and was a driving force to start the Parish Nurse program. Amelia never met a stranger. She made the world more beautiful with her smile, contagious laughter, decorating talent and green thumb.
She walked many miles around the Carolina Mall, smiling and talking with her walking buddies. Her children’s friends were also her children, and she loved to be called “Mama Jones”. Amelia dedicated her life to God and always said, “I have been so blessed”.
She shared those blessings with everyone she met. Amelia’s greatest love was her home and her family. She will be greatly missed by everyone.
She is survived by her children, Tommy Jones and wife, Kathy of Mt. Pleasant, Dr. Mike Jones and wife, Susan of Concord , Laura Lane and Lisha Skinner of Montrose, WV, Tien Tran and wife, Jatam of Concord, Jeff Jones and wife, Brenda of Kernersville, Clayton Jones, Jr. “Chip” and wife, Tricia of Alpharetta, GA; grandchildren Ashley , Carly, Emily, Scott, Betsy, Jarrett, Kaylee, Maggie, Allie ; and great-grandchildren, Gibson and Luke. The family will receive friends Thursday, September 6 from 5-7 P.M. at Wilkinson Funeral Home.
A memorial service to celebrate Amelia ‘s life will be held on Friday, September 7 at 2 P.M. at Central United Methodist Church, officiated by the Rev. Carol Carkin. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Cabarrus County Boys and Girls Club, P.O.
