OBITUARY Anne E. Sturtevant July 19, 1943 – July 25, 2018 Anne Elizabeth Sturtevant (Anne E. Fitzpatrick), passed away on July 25, 2018, following a traumatic brain injury caused by a fall. The week before her death, Anne had turned seventy-five, and had enjoyed a warm and wonderful time with her two children and sisters. She celebrated her birthday and her new townhome in Ames, Iowa.
Anne was born on July 19, 1943, to Donald G. Fitzpatrick and Betty L. Jensen Fitzpatrick in Oxford, Mississippi, where her father was stationed during World War II. Anne was raised in Marblehead, Massachusetts, but frequently traveled to Exira, Iowa, the childhood home of her mother and home of her grandparents, Congressman Ben Jensen and Lottie Jensen. Anne graduated from Marblehead High School as salutatorian in 1960, and graduated from the University of Iowa, Magna cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa in 1967.
She later obtained a doctorate with honors from New York University Medical College with a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology in 1985. Anne began her clinical counseling practice in 1985, at the North Shore Counseling Center in Beverly, Massachusetts where she worked with troubled families. Anne later opened a private practice where she counseled individuals, couples, and families.
During her counseling practice of thirty-three years, Anne was loved, appreciated and respected by her patients for her compassion, understanding, and sound advice. She retired just before she moved to Ames, Iowa, to live near her three sisters in 2017. Anne married Peter M. Sturtevant in 1969.
They first lived in New York City, and then in Saigon during the Viet Nam War when Peter was the Bureau Chief for CBS News. During that assignment, they also traveled throughout Asia and Africa. They returned to New York City after the war.
Anne was divorced in 1984, and then decided to move back to her childhood home in Marblehead, Massachusetts where she later met and married Joseph J. Kray whose company restored eighteenth and nineteenth century homes. Anne was interested in religion, politics, and design. She enjoyed spirited religious discussions and was an active member of the Lectio Religious Discussion Group at the Old North Church in Marblehead.
Also, she tirelessly worked on Massachusetts senatorial and congressional campaigns, and upon coming to Iowa, she contributed to an Iowa congressional primary campaign by calling Iowans to get out the vote. In addition, Anne loved working on her Marblehead home and gardens. After she moved to Ames, Anne invested countless hours designing her new townhome which she finished shortly before her tragic death.
Anne was loving, caring and loyal to her family members and friends. When she moved to Iowa, Anne also reconnected with alumnae from the University of Iowa and the Delta Gamma Sorority.
