Anthony J. Peidl Sr. age 102 years of Gibbstown died Friday January 25, 2019 in his home with his family by his side. He was born and raised in Philadelphia and moved to Gibbstown in 1966. Mr. Peidl was a veteran serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II as a top gunner and aircraft mechanic.

He was shot down by a German plane and was a POW in Italy for 10 months until his escape. Mr. Peidl retired after 25 years of service at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard as a storekeeper. After his retirement he continued to work for ten additional years as a bridge tender in Bridgeport.

He was a member of St. Clare of Assisi Parish, St. Michael Church, Gibbstown, the Anthony T. Calista V.F.W. Post #5579, Gibbstown and the POW’s. Mr. Peidl enjoyed bowling, playing the steel guitar and was an avid Phillies fan. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Theresa Peidl (nee Hagenberg) of Gibbstown; his children, Anthony Jr. and Gina Peidl of Gibbstown, Theresa and Greg Rego of Mantua and his grandchildren, Griffin Rego and Stephanie Peidl.

Mr. Peidl was predeceased by his parents, Emerich and Katherina Peidl and his siblings, Emerich, Martin, George and Katherine. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 AM Wednesday January 30, 2019 in St. Clare of Assisi Parish, St. Michael’s Church, Memorial Ave. , Gibbstown.

Relatives and friends may visit with the family Wednesday morning after 9:30 AM until service time. Interment Woodbury Memorial Park, West Deptford. Arrangements by McBride – Foley Funeral Home, Paulsboro.
