Obituary for Basil Walter Matney Mr. Basil Walter Matney, age 83, of Richlands, Virginia passed away Wednesday, April 18, 2018 at his home following a lengthy illness. Basil was born in Buchanan County, and was the son of the late Alexander and Nearvie Compton Matney. Hard work came naturally to him, laboring from the time he was a small boy until the age of 80, when he decided to retire from driving trucks for Consolidated Steel.
Basil was a man of few words, but when he spoke it mattered. Basil had attended the Richlands Tabernacle and he had an impressive depth of faith and love for God, evidenced not by his words, but by his actions and his treatment of others. He was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather and great grandfather who will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by, one great-grandchild Uriah Robinette; five brothers, Lindburg Matney, Jimmy Matney, Theodore Matney, Elmer Matney, Otis Matney; sisters, Hazel Matney, Marie Keen; and one son-in-law, Huffard (Bill) Belcher. He is survived by: His loving wife of 63 years, Evelyn Marie Ratliff Matney Daughters: Sherrie Belcher of Richlands, VA Sheilah Cooper and husband, Danny of Cedar Bluff, VA Granddaughters: Natasha Cox of Richlands, VA Daniella Robinette and husband, Dustin of Cedar Bluff, VA Sheena Hubbard and husband, Matthew of Abingdon, VA Great-grandchildren: Gavin and Gabi Cox, Braum, Amara, Rand and Maelah Robinette, Aubrey, Evelyn, Basil and Alexander Hubbard Brother, Arlin (Dennis) Matney and wife Goldie of Cedar Bluff, VA Sisters–in-law: Margaret Matney of, TX June Matney of Fredericksburg, VA Rose Cantrell of Raven, VA Pauline Smith of Grundy, VA Several nieces, nephews and a host of friends also survive. Funeral services for Basil Matney will be conducted at 1:00 pm on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at the Richlands Tabernacle, 2505 3rd St., Richlands, Virginia with the Rev.
Phillip Horton, Rev. David Horton, and Rev. Robert Osborne officiating.
Entombment will follow at the Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum in Claypool Hill, Virginia. Pallbearers will be Gavin Cox, Braum Robinette, Anthony Cox, Dustin Robinette, Ronnie Rife, Donnie Rife, Michael Matney, Chris Howington, Scott Lambert and Matthew Hubbard. Honorary Pallbearers will be Bill Smith, Ronnie Osborne, John Hale, Employees of Consolidated Steel and men of the Richlands Tabernacle.
The family will begin receiving friends, Friday beginning at 6:00 pm at the Richlands Tabernacle.
