Obituary for Bernhard J. Bastian Bernhard Joseph Bastian, 90, of Royal Oak, Michigan passed away on November 4th, 2018 of natural causes. The funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, November 10th (In state will be from 9:30 – 10:00 a.m.) at the National Shrine of the Little Flower Basilica in Royal Oak. Fr.

John Kopson will officiate the Mass, with Fr. Edward Prus of the Archdiocese of Detroit as the co-officiant. Visitation will be held at Wm.

Sullivan & Son Funeral Home in Royal Oak on Friday, November 9th from 3:00 – 8:00 p.m. Burial will follow the funeral at Roseland Park Cemetery in Berkley. Bernhard was born in Poughkeepsie, New York on July 6, 1928. He graduated from Poughkeepsie High School and went on to receive his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mechanical and metallurgical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York.

He also served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was stationed at Fort Riley Military Base. Bernie, as his friends knew him, married Marta Prenting on September 6, 1953; they were married for 65 years. He worked as a metallurgical engineer for nearly 40 years, beginning his career with IBM and the Edison Institute in New York and New Jersey, before moving to Detroit in 1957.

Bernie had an extensive career in the automotive industry, first working for Chrysler before moving on to the Ford Motor Company. He was an avid pilot, fly fisherman, and stamp collector. Bernie was very active in the American Welding Society, holding multiple positions, while receiving numerous rewards, including lifetime achievement recognition in 2018.

Bernie was most proud of his wife and eleven children. He is survived by his wife, Marta, children, 31 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren. Bernhard was preceded in death by his brothers, Edward and Gilbert.
