Bernice Lawrence Tolan departed this life March 13th after a brief illness, surrounded by family. She was born in Copperhill, TN, May 31st, 1922 to P. Albert Lawrence and Lelia Patterson Lawrence. She graduated from Epworth H.S. in the area and later attended McKenzie Business College in Chattanooga, TN.

She worked as a Clerk Typist at the Bell Bomber Factory (later Lockheed) prior to raising her children and later as a secretary at Raymond Concrete Pile Co., as well as Clerk Typist for the Federal Government at the Richard Russell Bldg. in downtown Atlanta. Mrs. Tolan was preceeded in death by husbands, Frank Painter and John H. Tolan; by her son, John H. Tolan, Jr.; two brothers, Luke and Fred; and sister, Ruth.

She is survived by her three daughters: Sheran Loudermilk (Mike) of Woodstock; Cathy Tolan Curlette (Bill) of Stone Mountain; and Suzanne Belk (Jim) of Kennesaw; her sister, Sally Godfrey of Pensacola and by multiple grandchildren; great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, and grand and great nieces and nephews, as well as a host of friends. She instilled in her children a love of learning, an appreciation of visual arts, music of all types and reading. She also passed on the importance of the Golden Rule by example.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity “Crawling for Reid” (online), established in honor of Mrs. Tolan’s brave, sweet great great nephew, affected by the rare skin disease epidermolysis bullosa; or the charity of your choice.
