Obituary for Bertha Hakun Bertha Hakun (née Sheleva) passed away in Lima Estates, Media on August 20th due to complications following lung cancer. She was 89. Bertha was born June 28, 1929, to Anna and Dmytro Sheleva.

She graduated from Clifton Heights High School where she was a three-sport athlete, cheerleader and member of the choir and drama clubs. After graduation, Bertha worked at Liberty Mutual Insurance Company where she became a supervisor in the underwriting department. She married John Hakun in August of 1957.

The Hakuns moved to Locust Road in Morton, where they started their family. Mrs. Hakun returned to work for Gowen Insurance Agency in Springfield. She retired in 1985 and dedicated her time to cooking, swimming and caring for her grandchildren, as well as volunteering at her church.

She moved to Lima Estates in 2014 where she enjoyed playing pinochle, bingo and sharing her “gift of gab” with friends. Mrs. Hakun was a passionate and knowledgeable sports and arts enthusiast. She sang for the Saint Peter and Paul and Holy Ghost Ukrainian Catholic Choirs.

Her cooking talents were used for church fundraisers and functions. Her specialties included traditional Ukrainian fare: pierogis, stuffed cabbage (holubtsi), and various breads. Mrs. Hakun is survived by her sons John, Richard and Eric (Wendy); her brother, James Sheleva (Nora); and three grandchildren Natasha (Chris), Jacqueline and Kyle.

She is preceded in death by her husband, John; siblings Walter, Mary, Andy, Ruthie and Godziba. Visitation will be August 24th beginning at 9:30 at the Holy Myrh-Bearers Ukrainian Catholic Church, 900 Fairview Rd, Swarthmore PA 19081 followed by a service at 10:30. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Bertha’s life.

Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Holy Myrh-Bearers Ukrainian Catholic Church. To send flowers or a memorial gift to the family of Bertha Hakun please visit our Sympathy Store.
