Obituary for Betty O’Connor Betty Jo O’Connor, 92, formerly of Shinnston passed away Sunday, April 8, 2018 in Charleston, WV. Betty Jo was born at 9:00 A.M. on October 19, 1925 in Viropa, WV. She was the eighth child and second daughter of Edward James and Clara Bell (Yost) O’Connor.

Her siblings; James Thomas, Mary, Michael, Eugene, Isaac Phillip “Junior”, and Richard “Dick” preceded her in death. Upon graduating from Shinnston High School Class of 1943, Betty Jo sought adventure in San Francisco where she worked as a telephone operator during the 1940s. She returned home to Shinnston at the cusp of 1950s where she resumed her career as a telephone operator, this time for C&P Telephone Company, Betty Jo’s career extended until her retirement in the mid-1970s.

Outside of her career, Betty Jo was affiliated with the Shinnston Moose Chapter 699 and the American Legion Post 31. She thought of the members of these two organizations as family. In addition to her parents and siblings, she is preceded in death by several cousins John J. and Virginia “Toots” O’Connor, Genevieve and Cad Shafferman, Paul and Gretchen Sweeney, William C. “Bill” Martin, Margaret “Peggy” Shafferman Garrett, and Gary Shafferman.

Betty Jo is survived by Margaret “Mimi” O’Connor Martin, John P. O’Connor, Larry O’Connor, Marlene Sweeney Hulsey, Linda Sweeney Escue, Pamela Sweeney Dempsey and their families. Friends will be received at the Harmer Funeral Home in Shinnston on Sunday April 15,2018 from 2-5 PM. A graveside service will be held on Monday April 16,2018 at 1:00 PM, at the Shinnston Memorial Cemetery, with Rev.
