Betty Lou Breckenridge, 81, of Newton died on Wednesday, January 2, 2019, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, January 7, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. The family will greet friends from 3-5 p.m., Sunday, January 6, at the funeral home.

Memorials to the Newton Community Schools (to be used for library res) or to RSVP may be left at the funeral home. Betty, the daughter of Grover Kenneth and Violet Irene (Meline) Lackey, was born on October 24, 1937 in Kimball, Minnesota. At the age of four her family moved to Newton, Iowa.

Betty graduated from Newton High School in the class of 1955. On October 1, 1955, Betty was united in marriage with Thomas L. Breckenridge in Newton. They were blessed with three children: Kristi, Pam, and Jeffrey.

Betty was active in the kids’ classrooms and activities as they were growing up. She later worked for over 20 years at the Vernon Company, retiring in the mid 1990’s. Betty was a member of the Ikettes and loved being a RSVP volunteer as she spent her time reading to and with kids in the Newton School District.

She also enjoyed fishing, crafting, ceramics, crocheting, and playing Bingo. Those left to honor Betty’s memory are her children, Kristi (Ken) Nelson of Newton, Pam Priaulx of Newton, and Jeffrey (Pam Anderson) Breckenridge of Des Moines; grandchildren, Dustin (Christen) Breckenridge, Miranda Breckenridge, Jenna Priaulx, Clint (Misty) Nelson, and Jacob (Kassy) Nelson; 11 great-grandchildren; her brother-in-law, Bill (Billie) Breckenridge of Blue Springs, Missouri; sisters-in-law, Nancy Manatt of Newton and Colleen (Ron) Henderson of Colfax; and her nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Grover Kenneth Lackey; mother, Violet Irene Dye; her husband, Thomas in 2014; and brother, Robert Lackey in 2014.
