Burl S. Roark, age 83, of Crystal Springs, died Wednesday, July 4, 2018. He was born on December 11, 1934 in Poyen, the son of Robert Guy Roark and Pauline Bowers Roark. On August 5, 1955, he married Jeanette Borrow.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Bobby Ray Roark, Bill Roark, Jimmy Roark and Tommy Gerald Roark; and one sister, Debbie Drapper. Burl was a Christian in faith and a Mason and Shriner. He was a United States Marine Corps veteran and served from 1954 – 1957 and he also played on the Marine Corps basketball team.

He served as a coach, principal and superintendent for many school districts around the state of Arkansas, including, Glenwood, Caddo Hills, Decatur, Bearden, Poyen, Dumas and Hermitage. At the time, he was the youngest superintendent in the United States. After retiring from education, Burl owned and operated Burl’s Smokehouse in Crystal Springs for over 30 years.

He also enjoyed assisting his son with the Outlaw Bear Guide Service and he killed his first bear at age 81. He is survived by his wife, Jeanette Roark of Crystal Springs; one son, Sandy Roark of Crystal Springs; two daughters, Karen Martin of Bentonville and Kimberly Roark of Crystal Springs; six grandchildren, Alexandria Ferguson, Zan Martin, Sanders Roark, III, Hunter Roark, Brandy Roark and Jenna Roark; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Jon Roark and Kay Roark; three sisters, Ersel Hull-McDaniel, Mary Freeman and Marty Austin; numerous nieces, nephews and a host of wonderful friends. Graveside services will be held at 10:00 AM, Monday, July 9, 2018 in the Lowe Cemetery with Ersel Hull-McDaniel officiating.
