Obituary for Calvin “Butch” Stands Calvin “Butch” Leroy Stands, “Wanbli Kinyan” was born on March 11, 1939 in Pine Ridge, SD to Daniel G. Stands, Sr. and Monica (Irving) Stands. Calvin made his journey to the Spirit World on August 3, 2018 at the Oglala Sioux Lakota Nursing Home near White Clay, NE. Calvin attended the Holy Rosary Mission School near Pine Ridge, SD before his family moved to Chicago, IL where Calvin enlisted in the United States Navy on March 20, 1956.
Calvin was stationed at the U.S. Naval Air Station in Brunswick, Maine where he was an aviation and jet engine mechanic. Calvin was honorably discharged from the Navy on February 11, 1960 after serving over 3 years in the United States Navy. Calvin returned home to Pine Ridge where he worked for the OST Land Office for over 30 years.
During his time back home, Calvin enjoyed spending time with his close friends and family relaxing and playing multiple rounds of golf. Calvin was known around the area as an avid golfer and he had hit 3 hole in ones! Calvin is survived is survived by his uncle, Seth Irving of Albuquerque, NM; brother, Vernon Stands of Rapid City, SD; daughters, Leslie Trueblood of Fort Riley, KS, Virginia Trueblood, Darla Trueblood, Jeannie Trueblood, Jeanette Trueblood, and Valaura Trueblood all of Pine Ridge, SD; son, Daniel Trueblood of Rapid City, SD; 23 grandchildren, and 29 great grandchildren.
Calvin was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel, Sr. and Monica Stands; brothers, Daniel Stands, Jr., Francis Irving, and Duane Stands; sisters, Stella Irving and Illa Red Owl; 2 grandchildren; and 2 great grandchildren. Wake Services: One night wake service starting at 3:00 PM, Tuesday, August 7, 2018 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pine Ridge, SD with Rosary services starting at 7:00 PM with Military Roll Call following.
