Funeral services for Carl A. Bendixen, 79, of Norfolk will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 20, 2018, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Norfolk: Reverend Dan Andrews will officiate. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Norfolk. Visitation will be Friday from 4-7 p.m. with a rosary at 7, all at the church.
Home for Funerals, is in charge of arrangements. He passed away Tuesday, October 16. Carl August Bendixen was born August 29, 1939 on the family farm east of Battle Creek to Matthias August and Alma Johanna (Hellmers) Bendixen.
He attended Battle Creek public schools until sophomore year of high school when the family moved to Norfolk. He is a graduate of Norfolk Senior High School (1957), Norfolk Junior College, and Worsham College of Mortuary Science (Chicago, IL). After internships in Chicago and Omaha, Carl joined the staff of the Home for Funerals and became co-owner in 1968.
Carl married (the late) Mary Ann Backhaus in 1962 and they welcomed children Linda, Cory and Chris. Carl was active in parish and community life, serving on multiple boards and in numerous organizations, including the American Legion, Army National Guard, Cosmopolitan Club, Elks Lodge, Knights of Columbus, Norfolk United Fund, Norfolk Volunteer Fire Department, Oddfellows Lodge, Optimists, Orphan Grain Train, Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, and Sacred Heart/St. Mary’s parish, among others. After the untimely death in 1987 of his beloved wife Mary Ann, he was blessed to find love a second time with Margaret Ann “Peg” Eucks; they were married in 1990.
Carl was an excellent husband, a fabulous father, a wonderful friend and a formidable card player. He cared deeply about his friends and family, and was proud of his connections to the Norfolk Public and Catholic schools, Battle Creek, and his German heritage. He was kind, generous, loving and funny.
Carl is survived by his wife, Peg; his children Linda (Bill Morgan), Cory, and Chris (Tom Salatte); grandsons Paulino Bendixen, and Edward and William Morgan; sister Geraldine (Lee) Ott, brother Gerald (Donna) Bendixen, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary Ann; his parents, Matthias and Alma; sister Lavern (Schulz) Gertonson, and brothers Melvin Bendixen and Arnold Schulz. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Norfolk Catholic School Endowment Fund and/or the Northeast Nebraska Animal Shelter.
