Catherine Wallace Denton, 97, of Lawndale, passed away Sunday, June 24, 2018 at Wendover in Shelby. Born in Cleveland County on March 7, 1921, she was a daughter of the late Braxton Cleveland Wallace, Sr. and Nettie Lee Southards Wallace. Mrs. Denton will be remembered for her great skill in making draperies for many people, and teaching drapery making at Cleveland Community College.

She was also a very active member of Lawndale Baptist Church where she had taught the Acteens, Sunbeam… Read More » Class, and worked with the children. Catherine loved her family and enjoyed spending time with them. She fondly called her grandchildren her babies.

In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband, Fred Williams Denton, Sr.; daughter, Carolyn Sigmon; three brothers, B.C. Wallace, Vernon Wallace and Van Wallace; and three sisters, Agnes Garver, Dorothy LaPorte, and Janice Elmore. She is survived by her two sons, Fred Denton, Jr. and wife Brenda of Asheville, NC and Melvin Denton and wife Gracie of Concord, NC; daughter, Linda Cornwell and husband Dickie of Shelby; eleven grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren and several loving nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 1:00pm to 2:00pm at Lawndale Baptist Church.

The funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 2:00pm at Lawndale Baptist Church with the Rev. Jim Kilby officiating. Memorial may be made to Lawndale Baptist Church, PO Box 126, Lawndale, NC 28090.
