Obituary for Mr. Charles E. Harrell Charles E. Harrell (1924 – 2018) boarded the train for Heaven on December 15, 2018, no bags needed just a one-way ticket. In a home with many and a room of two, on a rainy night in the early morning, he heard the whistle blow and knew the time had come. He rose up and was about to depart, and he turned and looked at who he used to be.
Now……no pain, no suffering, no sickness, no trials, and no tribulations…. . he slowly boarded the train and departed from this world.
Charles E. Harrell was born on January 11, 1924 in Ahoskie, North Carolina to Tom and Lucy Harrell. He was one of four sons, Thomas, Ralph, and Winston and one sister, Absoluta. At a young age, he was baptized at New Bethany Baptist Church in North Carolina.
He visited his hometown frequently and every time it was church Sunday, he would attend. While in the Navy, stationed in Norfolk, Virginia he married his sweetheart Blanch Simmons. After serving his time in the Navy, they moved to New Jersey.
In addition to full time jobs, they purchased several businesses, including two gas stations and two apartment buildings. They owned and operated Father and Sons Used Furniture for over 30 years. They retired in 2003.
In 1967, he began attending Mt. Carmel Baptist Church and he and his wife joined the church. They loved the pastor, the church, the congregation and most of all the Lord.
He served as Chairman of the Deacon Board, as well as a member of the Missionaries and Hospitality clubs. He attended bible study every Wednesday night and served Communion to the sick and shut-in every first Sunday. When the pastor was speaking at another church he always went….
that’s what his life was about. After Reverend Rufus C. Goodman retired, he began worshiping at other churches. He started attending his friend and pastor, Reverend Kevin Hughley’s church, Bethany Baptist in Farmingdale, New Jersey.
Now he is at the end of his journey. A faithful servant and follower of Jesus Christ. “We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord”.
(2 Corinthians 5:8) He will be deeply missed by his children June Childs, with whom he resided; Tia-Juana (Tia) Green, husband Edward; Richard (Ricky) and wife, Shelia; also his granddaughter, whom he and his wife helped raise, Kristine N Smith, husband Michael. He also leaves to cherish his loving memory six grandchildren, Kristine N. Smith, Kimberly Cody, Edward and Eric Green, Kevin Williams, and Joshua Gaines; four great-grandchildren, Madison and Mason Smith, Nyrhi Briggs and I-Jewel Gaines; sister-in law, Sadie Mae Pierce. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Blanch Harrell; a son Charles A Harrell, Jr.; his parents, Tom and Lucy Harrell; brothers Ralph Harrell, Thomas Harrell, and Winston Harrell; and sister, Absoluta Watford.
