Charles St. John October 03, 1928 – February 04, 2019 Share this obituary Send Flowers Sign Guestbook| Send Private Condolences| Send Sympathy Card Charles Gustav (Gus) St. John, 90, of Rome, NY passed away peacefully on Monday, Feb. 4th at Rome Memorial Hospital. He was born Oct.
3rd 1928 in Salamanca, NY, the son of Charles F. St. John and Florence Mae (Scott) St. John. Gus graduated from Bradford Senior High School in 1946. He proudly served in the US Navy from 1948 through 1952.
Gus attended Clarkson College of Technology (now Clarkson University) and graduated with a bachelor of Electrical Engineering in 1957. He was a member of Eta Kappa Nu, an honorary fraternity of electrical engineers. Gus worked as an electrical/electronic engineer for the US Air Force (Rome Air Development Center) for 26 years.
Gus is survived by one devoted daughter and son in law, Danielle and Charles ton and 3 sons and daughters in law, Chad and Michele ton of Utica, NY, Scott and Kristin Romano-ton of Montclair, VA and Trevor and Jennifer St. John of Rome, NY. Gus was very proud of his grandchildren, Isaiah, Noah, and Leah ton, Kyle ton; Megan(ton) and Shane Mahosky, Sara VanSlyke, Katy, Andy, and Dana ton, Alex St. John and great granddaughter, Paisley Mahosky. Dad was an absolutely brilliant man who received many accolades for work at (RADC) now referred to as Rome Lab.
As an electronic engineer, he had been commended by the electronic systems division for the pre-eminent manner in which he performed his duties as a group leader at RADC on the multimillion dollar sub-system AN/FLR-12. Dad was also the author of several technical articles which have been presented at national symposiums. Dad is well known throughout the Utica/Rome area for his many letters to the editor.
He was a voracious reader who loved to discuss the current political events and then quote the constitution. Dad was an animal lover of his cats and dogs and was very passionate about woodworking and singing in the choir at the First Presbyterian Church in Rome. The best description of Dad is summed up by his son Trevor, “He eclipsed the intelligence of everyone in every room he ever walked in to and you’d never know it”.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, Feb. 8th at 2:00pm at the First Presbyterian Church 108 W. Court St. Rome, NY. There are no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Gus’ memory may be made to the music program at First Presbyterian Church 108 W. Court St. Rome, NY or the Humane Society of Rome, NY at 6247 Lamphear Rd. Rome, NY.
